Flooding isolated communities in northern New South Wales in late November 2011. Rising waters cut off roughly 1,800 residents of Wee Waa, and about 200 rural properties in the vicinity of Moree, according to news reports. On November 27, authorities predicted that Wee Waa would face a week of flood-imposed isolation, the Australian Associated Press reported.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured these images on November 28, 2011 (top), and November 19, 2011 (bottom). Both images use a combination of visible and infrared light to better distinguish between water and land. Water ranges from electric blue to navy. Vegetation is bright green. Bare ground is earth-toned.

The November 28 images shows flood water sprawling over a landscape that had been largely dry just nine days earlier. Wee Waa sits along the Namoi River – visibly swollen on November 28. ABC News Australia reported that overnight on November 27 – 28, this river experienced major flooding, peaking even higher than predicted. North of Wee Waa, this image shows, flood water surrounds Moree, and extends into Queensland.

In late November 2011, dust storms blew off mainland Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this natural-color image on November 27, 2011.

A small dust plume blows off mainland Mexico over Golfo de California (Gulf of California), almost reaching Baja California. Source points for that plume are not apparent in this image, but the clear skies over most of the Mexican state of Sonora indicate that the dust has arisen near the coast.

Source points do appear for the dust plumes arising from the Baja California Peninsula. Midway down the peninsula, where the dust arises, sandy desert comprises much of the landscape.
